Tempered Auto Glass

With the exception of windshields, tempered glass is used for most car and truck applications. Tempered glass is a single lite of glass that is “tempered,” or heated to a very high temperature, and rapidly cooled. This process results in a strong piece of glass that, when broken, crumbles into small pieces rather than break into shards.

Laminated Auto Glass

Laminated auto glass is used in windshields, as well as some other glass parts. Consisting of two pieces (or lites) of glass, with a plastic layer sandwiched in between, laminated glass meets federal standards with at least .030” of PVB between each lite of glass.

Both laminated and tempered glass can be coated with a film that provides for privacy, mirror, or solar (UV) protection. Solar coatings reduce the load on the vehicle’s air conditioning, and may provide improved fuel economy.

Almost every piece of auto glass has a monogram, or “bug” imprinted on it – usually in the lower right hand corner.  This bug contains critical information about the specifics of the glass, such as the manufacturer, the glass type (tempered or laminated), where it was manufactured, the month and year of manufacture, the model number, the Department of Transportation certification number and the glass code.  By looking at the bug, you can see if your repair shop used DOT approved parts, and whether those parts are new or from a wrecking yard.

At Glass Doctor we specialize in auto glass. Our certified technicians will come to your home or place of business and replace a damaged windshield, or other auto glass. Schedule your appointment with us today!
